Cleaned the cage today + training update

Hi! Today I cleaned the parakeet's cage. You can look at my Parakeet Care post to see the different parts. I did it differently this time than in the post. Now I do it by myself except my mom helps me put the top on an off and get the toys in. I also didn't do the soaking.

Anyway, this time I got out the old parakeet toys. I had a lot, and I realized I don't need to get them many toys for Christmas. Maybe just one natural wood perch. I read that rope is kind of dangerous because their claws can get caught, and the pink ring one they had before is getting frayed and pooped on, so I took that out. I put in a swing, a coconut, a ladder, a Ferris wheel, and some egg carted sections taped together I made a  long time ago.

Also, the back panel of the cage was falling down and it's kind of done always. I think I didn't set it up right the first and only time I did when I got Winston. Or maybe it just came loose. But today my mom fixed it! Yay!

They were really scared when I was reaching in to change the toys and everything. I was worried they wouldn't trust me and my hand like they have been. But once I got everything in and good and I put them back on the dresser, I put the food, water, bathtub, and newspaper in like I do in the mornings, and they didn't run away very much, like usual!

Training update: The first step is standing near their cage. They are doing really well! They eat in front of me and go in the bathtub in front of me. When I change the food and water I go slow and tell them what I'm doing. Cobalt usually sits there or moves a few steps. It's great!

Training My Parakeets

Hi everyone! I got inspired by my mom telling me about someone she knows with birds. It made me want to take care of and train my parakeets more. So I researched some things and made this plan:

I want to clean the cage often
I will buy them new toys for Christmas
I will learn to clip their wings myself
Once they are hand trained totally, I will buy a big play gym on wheels so they can play out of their cage.

I will do each of these steps in the morning for at least a week until they don't run away when I do them. Across from them is something that I should do from the above list around the same time.

1. Stand by the cage                                                                        Clean cage
2. Have my hand up near the cage, maybe with food                     Toys for Christmas
3. Hand on the cage
4. Hand in the cage
5. Hand in front of them
6. Have them step on my hand and stay                                         Clip wings
7. Move my hand with them on it
8. Bring hand out of cage                                                               Buy play gym

Here's the play gym-

It's big and has wheels. It has food cups and perches and ladders and places to hang toys. It costs $77.08. That will be hard to save up for, but I can do it. It might take more than 8 weeks, but training them will probably take longer than that anyway.
A little bit of my money I earn from my business selling crafts at the Nauvoo Marketplace will go towards buying toys and the play gym for my parakeets.
Also, email me at rebeccashandmadeart@gmail.com to order a custom paper quilled necklace.

I'm really hoping I can train them. I've tried other times, but I just forget. But I'm motivated by the play gym and the fact that I wrote this post. People will know that I'm training my parakeets.

My Parakeet Care

This is a post about how I take care of my parakeets.

Food and Water

Parakeet seeds
I feed my parakeets store bought seeds. I hope to get them a better diet. I'm going to try giving them vegetables more.
I change their food and water every morning. Read the Cleaning section for more information.

Play

The parakeets play together. They chirp and fly around in their cage. I'm hoping to start bonding and training them.

Bathing

The parakeets have a bathtub attached to their cage. Sometimes I refill it and they play in it.

Cleaning

I clean the parakeet's cage and things. There are things I do daily, like changing food, water, and newspapers, there's changing the water in their bathtub, and cleaning their cage.

Daily
Food cup
I change the parakeet's food and water cup and change their newspapers. For the food cup, I empty it into the  trash and put new seeds in. For water, I empty it into the toilet and put new water in. For newspapers, I throw away the old ones and put new ones in the bottom.
Then I wash my hands and vacuum the dirty tray we put underneath the whole cage.

Bath
I change the parakeet's bathwater once in a while. It all evaporates. When I change it, they play in it for a while, then don't use it much. I guess maybe I should change it more often.
To change it, I empty it into the toilet and refill it. It always drips everywhere on the way back to the cage.

Cage
My mom helps me clean the big bottom of the cage and some perches and the cups every few months.
We take off the bottom part and keep the parakeets in the top part on the floor.

Top taken off
She cleans the food and water cups and the bathtub, I clean the big black part and perches and stuff.
The water cup is extra gross. She rubs the stuff off. She cleans the bird poop off the cups.
I clean off the bottom of the cage and the perches with bathwater. I use a brush to get the bird poop off.

Cleaning cage

Then we put the cage back together and  the parakeets have a clean cage!

That's how I take care of my parakeets!

My Parakeets

Hi! This is a post about my parakeets and how I got them.

I love birds. I learned about parakeets and really wanted one for a pet. I thought it would be so cool to hold it and stuff. My parents didn't really want any more pets. I researched how to convince your parents to get a pet. I researched all about parakeets and made a binder of how to take care of them and how much it would cost. Finally I finished. I convinced them and they said I could get a parakeet the day after Christmas. My parents got me a birdcage for my big Christmas present, and I saved up about 50 dollars to pay for a parakeet and its supplies.

The day after Christmas came, and we went to the pet store. I picked a green and yellow one that was sitting in the food dish. I was pretty sure it was a boy. I wanted a boy because I read that they are more acrobatic and talk more. I bought the supplies and we set up his cage at home.

I named him Winston. My friend suggested the name to me from a book she had read. I liked how it was the name of the cute yellow programming monster guy from Khan Academy.

Winston was scared at first. I kept trying to go in and pet and feed him or whatever. That was not a good idea. Finally at night we turned the lights out and he started moving.

I've had Winston for about 2 or 3 1/2 years I think maybe. He is old and is now almost all yellow except for the black feathers on his wings and tail. He is calmer than Cobalt I think.

Later, I wanted another parakeet. I wanted it to be Winston's friend because I didn't give him very much attention. We went to the pet store and got a blue and white parakeet. I named it Marty McFly (from Back to the Future) because he could fly. Then we thought it might be a girl so I named her Marta and took her back to the store. We didn't want baby parakeets. We got another one I was pretty sure was a boy. I named him Cobalt. I think my sister suggested it when I was asking about names that mean blue.

     Cobalt and Winston became friends.

I guess I've had Cobalt for maybe about 2 years or something. I think he gets mad and squawks and flies around more than Winston.

Now Winston and Cobalt hang out and chirp and eat and play together.

Intro to this blog

Hi! Welcome to my blog, Parakeet Fluff! I have 2 parakeets named Winston and Cobalt.

This will be a blog about things I do with my parakeets and some fun stuff about parakeets. I plan on writing:
  • A page about how I take care of my parakeets
  • A page on convincing your parents to get a parakeet
  • Posts about things I do with my parakeets.
  • Parakeet stories and crafts
  • Tips, info, ideas
I plan on posting 3-6 times a week.

You can follow this blog on its Facebook page:

I started this blog so I could have fun and learn by writing and designing a blog. I hope the blog helps people have fun and learn things. It will also motivate me to take care of and pay attention to my parakeets better.

Look for my next post with information on my parakeets!

P.S. Parakeets are also known as budgies or budgerigars.
